Point enough for Morpeth to win promotion

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

MORPETH Town were held to a 1-1 home draw by Guisborough Town but the point was enough to seal their promotion to next season’s new-look Evo-Stik East League.

Former Sunderland striker Stephen Elliott gave Morpeth a second-half lead, pouncing on a clearance and rifling a low drive into the net from just inside the area.

Steven Roberts grabbed an equaliser ten minutes from time and the points were shared despite Ben Sayer going close in the last minute when his shot hit a post.

A late Jack Devlin goal gave Newcastle Benfield a 2-1 win against Dunston UTS at Sam Smith’s Park.

Paul Brayson put Benfield ahead on 56 minutes with his 45th goal of the season but Mark Fitzpatrick got the visitors on level terms.

With the game petering out to a draw Devlin fired home in injury time to give his side all three points.

Ryhope CW recovered from their weekend defeat against Morpeth Town with a 2-0 win over Ashington. Michael Rae opened the scoring on 56 minutes with a penalty after a foul on James Ellis.

Josh Home-Jackson added a second and that was enough to see off any resistance from the Colliers.

In Division Two Bedlington Terriers threw away a lead as they fell to a 4-1 defeat at Heaton Stannington.

Jack Foalle put the Terriers ahead in the 20th minute but that strike was cancelled out by a fine low drive from Jon Wright.

Josh Holland put the Stan in front on 37 minutes as his powerful strike was spilled by Terriers keeper David Stewart and crept over the line.

The Stan added a third on the hour mark when Richie Hoggins tapped home from close range after Stewart had parried a freekick from Matthew Parker.

Jason White’s second-half header gave Willington a 1-0 home win against Brandon United.
