Toney proves loan star as he hits goal trail with Scunny

NEWCASTLE United striker Ivan Toney is gathering plaudits in League One after hitting a rich vein of form with Scunthorpe United.

Toney now has his career back on track after a disappointing loan with Wigan Athletic earlier in the season.

The 22-year-old made the switch to Scunny on loan in January and he has since scored six goals for the Iron as they look to secure a play-off place.

Four goals in his last six games have seen Toney’s name in the headlines again, with his latest strike earning a 1-0 win at Lee Bowyer’s Charlton Athletic at the weekend.

After the game, Toney told Scunthorpe’s website: “That is my job. I am here to try and get goals for the team.

“I am sure we take a lot of confidence into these remaining games.

“We will go into them with the same mentality as we did against Charlton and have the same composure on the ball.”

Toney still has two years left on his Newcastle contract, but he has not done enough to find himself training with the first team under Rafa Benitez during his tenure as boss. Toney is due to return to Newcastle after his loan stint in North Lincolnshire and, while he will be hoping to end the season with a promotion medal, he then faces an important chapter of his career. After losing so many development players on free transfers after years of paying them a wage, Newcastle will be keen to cash in on some of their contracted players this summer if it is decided they don’t have a future on Tyneside. Toney is valued at £450,000 according to transfermarkt.co.uk, and United may be open to offers for the striker they signed from Northampton Town under Steve McClaren in 2015.
