Woman in face

-

that, you both persisted and attacked her violently.

“That involved you, Carter, continuing to pull her by the hair and you, Pollin, held her round the neck.

“There are clear marks to her neck.

“She describes slipping in and out of consciousness as she was held down by you, Pollin.

“Carter, what you did at that point was truly abhorrent. You picked up a pint glass and deliberately broke it against a wall.

“While she was being held down, you, Pollin, issued verbal threats, saying you had something in your handbag to take across her throat.

“Carter, you then used a piece of jagged glass and thrust it into her cheek.

“That gave rise to an injury that required 57 stitches and a scar which continues to persist.” The woman said in a victim impact statement she has been forced to move away from the area and now rarely leaves the house. She added: “I’ve been left with a life-changing scar to my face. “I’ve had to see a plastic surgeon and it’s not healed as it should. “I can’t lie on that side of my face because I still have pain there and the doctors have told me I’m prone to infection in the wound. “My mental health has been affected too. “I’ve been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder and constantly relive the night in question.” She said she had to give “traumatic evidence” at Pollin’s trial and added: “I will never be able to feel free of this incident and will have a constant reminder of what they did long after they are Victim released from prison.”

The court heard Carter, 41, of no fixed address, has 50 previous convictions while Pollin, 37, of Whinfield Terrace, Highfield, Rowlands Gill, has 12 previous convictions.

Rachel Hedworth, for Carter, said: “She is extremely remorseful and is desperately sorry for her utterly abhorrent actions.

“In the cold and sober light of day she is at a complete loss to explain the rationale behind her behaviour.

“This was utterly out of character.

Miss Hedworth said Carter was having mental health difficulties and has been a long term abuser of drugs.

She added that she had previously been subjected to systematic domestic violence by an ex-partner who ended up shooting her and leaving her with 32 pellets in her leg.

Ros Scott-Bell, for Pollin, said: “She’s thoroughly ashamed of her involvement in this offence.

“It was an appalling thing that occurred.

“She’s particularly ashamed she did not intervene and help the victim after the attack with the glass.

“She is remorseful, she asks me to apologise through the court to the victim.”

Miss Scott-Bell said an argument had blown up when the victim was at Carter’s home and in the heat of the moment they followed her back to the house “in a drug-fuelled rage”.

She added: “This was out of character. It was an evening which got completely out of hand.” A large glass panel above Fenwick’s department store “exploded” and shattered onto Newcastle’s busiest shopping street.

Shards of glass rained on to Northumberland Street yesterday morning after one of the canopies above the shop’s main display window fell to the ground.

Lee Morrow was walking down the street just after 9am when he saw the panel shatter, with some glass landing on a passer-by.

The 30-year-old, from Fawdon, said: “I was going to get some breakfast and I was walking past the Fenwick’s window when one of those big glass canopies just exploded.

“There were thousands of pieces of really thick glass.

“One lady was just about under the canopy and some of the glass landed on top of her.

“It was quite a shock, it was just like an explosion because of the glass being so thick.”

Fenwick have been contacted for a comment.
