Man died after being hurt in Tynemouth flat block blaze

A man has died in hospital nine days after he was injured in a fire at a block of flats.

The blaze broke out on a groundfloo­r home at the Knott Memorial Flats, off Tynemouth Road, in Tynemouth, on April 17.

Firefighte­rs and paramedics arrived at the scene at around 10.45am and a 34-year-old man was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with severe injuries.

He remained in a critical condition in hospital but he died on Thursday.

A Northumbri­a Police spokesman said: “A 34-year-old man has died from his injuries following a fire at Knott’s Flats, Tynemouth, on April 17.

“Police responded to a report of a fire at around 11.59am.

“Emergency services were already on the scene and a man was taken to hospital with life-threatenin­g injuries. Sadly, yesterday he passed away in hospital.

“Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and any witnesses should call police on 101 quoting log 0410 170418 or Crimestopp­ers anonymousl­y on 0800 555 111.”

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said its investigat­ions into the cause of the fire are also continuing.

During the incident, the brigade sent four engines to the flats, including crews from Tynemouth, South Shields and Wallsend who helped to deal with the blaze.

The Great North Air Ambulance was also called but the injured man was taken to hospital by road.
