End of an era as pub calls time

-

Reporter ONE of Whitley Bay’s best loved pubs is set to close its doors for good.

Regulars have hailed the closure of 42nd Street as the ‘end of an era’ after managers announced the bar would be calling time next month.

In an announcement on the pub’s Facebook page it was revealed that 42nd Street and the adjacent King George pub would cease trading on May 19 due to the site being bought by developers who plan to build flats.

More than 500 customers responded with sadness at what the closure could mean for the future of Whitley Bay’s nightlife.

Liam Arrowsmith wrote: “This is a disgrace, why build more flats that no one wants to live in cos there’s no life and soul left in the area. Whitley Bay doesn’t need or want more flats or care homes, it needs more bars and restaurants that people want to visit,”

42nd Street was a key fixture of Whitley Bay’s once thriving nightlife with many a reveller ending their session on South Parade at the bar. However, over recent years the seaside town, which was once a favourite with stag and hen parties from across the country, has seen its pubs and clubs gradually close. Paula Mulligan wrote on Facebook: “At least I was one of the lucky ones to experience Whitley Bay at its best, when the streets were heaving.”

Peter John Ross said: “I started going to Whitley Bay in the early 80s, when there were bars such as the Olive Grove, Rockfords, then Sands Club. 42nd Street is the only reminder of those times, and it’s sad to hear the news.”

However, the bar’s bosses are determined to see 42nd Street go out with bang. And regulars are urged to join them on their last night of serving.

On Facebook they wrote: “we have three weeks notice so our last day of trading will be Saturday, May 19. The only hope we have is the new owners are able to rent it back to us while they get planning etc, and we will continue to trade. We will keep everyone informed if this happens. Until then, we’d love to see you all end up at 42 for one last time.”
