THE ROYAL WIVES OF WINDSOR ITV, 9pm

MEGHAN Markle should tune in for this two-parter about Britain’s royal wives – there may be lessons to be learned from a long line of women before her.

Sure, they have not always been the merry wives of Windsor, but in all cases the women have certainly helped to shape the nation.

Looking at eight women who married into the royal family, this jolly romp through history, with plenty of archive clips, explores how they each helped transform the most famous dynasty in the world.

With each royal wife a sign of her times, it’s also a reflection of how the monarchy has adapted to modern times.

From the blue blood of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Queen Mother), to commoner Catherine Middleton and now divorced, actress Meghan, who, whisper it... is not British.

Other women to have caused shock and awe along the way were American divorcee Wallis Simpson, the mould-breaking Lady Diana Spencer of course, Sarah Ferguson, Camilla Parker-Bowles and Sophie Rhys Jones.

They have all faced public scrutiny as we watched their fairy tale weddings, scandals, sense of duty and tragedy – their journey has never been a simple one.

So what will it hold for the bride to be? With commentary from famous faces, including historian David Starkey, broadcaster Jeremy Paxman and biographer Andrew Morton, alongside butlers, bodyguards and press secretaries, this is a fascinating and timely insight.

Kickstarting a deluge of royal-themed documentaries in the run up to the big day, bring on the wedding fever!
