Belgians set to And Sels a fresh start

- By LEE RYDER

BELGIAN giants Anderlecht are ready to bring Matz Sels’ Newcastle United nightmare to an end this summer.

Anderlecht sporting director Luc Devroe is keen to agree a price on Sels with the Magpies after a successful loan deal for the goalkeeper this season.

The two clubs are yet to agree a price for Sels but United will look to at least recoup the £6m fee they paid for the 26-year-old back in 2016.

Back then Benitez felt that Sels was the man to help his Newcastle side to break quicker on the counter-attack but the move didn’t work out, and after a shaky start the Belgium international found himself axed after taking a heavy dose of social media trolling badly.

With Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot then establishing themselves under Benitez the decision was taken to loan Sels to Anderlecht, with the former KAA Gent keeper not guaranteed his place at St James’ Park.

Sels was actually keen to give it another go on Tyneside but the arrival of Martin Dubravka, and the impending permanent switch from Sparta Prague at the end of the season, means that the Lintborn shot-stopper will be further down the pecking order when he returns.

Anderlecht know they have between now and July to agree on a price for Sels, but Newcastle fans won’t be taking anything for granted after an agreed loan move for Aleksandar Mitrovic fell through at the last minute in January due to some poor organisation from the Jupiler Pro League outfit.
