Taxpayers must not be forgotten

-

ROBIN Ashby’s succinctly worded letter on 20th April detailed how the council cabinet structure reduces the democratic influence we retain through our councillors.

He argued that the previous committee structure was more democratic.

However, he also detailed how the Party Whip is used to reduce the democratic influence of our councillors, who we send to protect us from bad decisions.

Our democracy could be rescued and enlivened by extending the secret ballot to our council chambers, removing the anti-democratic and stifling threat from the Whips at a stroke. The only

inconsistency in Robin’s letter might be considered to be his remaining support for the old Liberal Party, which now votes for the last vestiges of democratic control to be exported to the EU in Brussels.

Their proclaimed but archaic, single market, designed in the 1950s, was never as single as suggested, and its purpose is more to reduce our famed world trade, and lock us into EU trade only.

Despite, or because of, all their ever-increasing regulations, it remains our world trade that is growing best.

Those who still wish to use their vote in May, hope that their local candidate retains an interest in their voters and taxpayers.

They ought not suffer bullying by anyone, but especially from outsiders, whether from London or Brussels. GEORGE BRITTAIN
