JON SHAW hailed his Monskeaton Academy side after they sealed a hat-trick of successive ChronicleLive Under-19 Cup victories.

The North Tyneside outfit narrowly defeated Heaton Manor 2-1 in the final at Cochrane Park – the 11th time in 13 years they have triumphed.

Monkseaton started in lively fashion, opening the scoring after only three minutes.

A great diagonal pass from defender George Lindo released Sam Douglas down the right and his cross was turned home by a Heaton defender under pressure from Marcus Giles.

Heaton equalised only two minutes later.

They then dominated the second half but could not create any clearcut chances.

This proved costly as, with 10 minutes to go, a long ball through the middle released Lindo, now playing up front, who ran into the area under a challenge but managed to finish well.

Monkseaton coach Jon Shaw said: “We were really pleased to win, especially as we were seen as the favourites beforehand.

“We started really well but despite having a lot of pressure it was only 1-1 at half-time.

“I was a bit disappointed with our second-half showing, but the lads have a lot of bottle and a lot of heart and managed to find a goal at the end.”

Cup organiser Alex Burnett said: “Both teams should be commended on their attitude and respect for each other.

“In terms of behaviour the teams were a credit to their managers and schools and it was a good advert for schoolboy football.”
