THE UK'S MOST ADMIRED PEOPLE

- By ALICE CACHIA

ONE is TV royalty and the other is actual royalty David Attenborough and Queen Elizabeth II have been named as the UK’s most admired man and woman.

The pair topped the annual YouGov poll, which asks the public to choose the man and woman they most admire from a list of candidates.

Similarities between the pair extend beyond the admiration they have earned - both are 91 years old and both began their professional careers in 1952.

Also featuring highly in the list are world leaders. Ex-president Barack Obama is our second most admired man, as is Michelle Obama for women.

The late Stephen Hawking is the UK’s third most popular man, and Judi Dench stole the spot for women.

Another royal to make it into the top five is Prince Harry - three positions ahead of his older brother.

Perhaps aptly twinned with Harry in fourth place is the world’s first billionaire author J.K. Rowling.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is the fifth most admired man, joined by Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai in the women’s category. News was not so positive for other political leaders, however. Prime Minister Theresa May failed to make the top 10. She came eleventh, behind SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon but ahead of Green Party leader Caroline Lucas. That being said, controversial ex UKIP leader Nigel Farage proved more admired than footballing legends David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, coming in at 12th position.

The UK’s most admired people differed to the overall global results, which put Bill Gates and Angelina Jolie at the top of their respective categories.

In fact, Microsoft te ch-g ian t-turned philanthropist Gates has topped the list of the world’s most admired men in all three years the survey has been conducted.

While Barack Obama and Michelle are again in respective second place globally, Jackie Chan and Oprah Winfrey come in third. Meanwhile, the only country across the 35 surveyed where Barack Obama proves less admired than current president Donald Trump is - perhaps unsurprisingly - Russia. Trump ranked in 11th place while Obama ranked 12th. The results were calculated by asking participants if they admired a person at all, and then which figure they admired the most.
