Heatwave was great while it lasted

FAMILIES made the most of the final rays of bank holiday sunshine across the North East on Monday before a return to work.

The first May bank holiday of 2018 was drenched with sun, with temperatures hitting the twenties.

Despite a slightly chillier climate at the coast, the long weekend’s weather was enjoyed across the region. In Newcastle, parks were filled with sun-seekers soaking up the rays, while beaches were filled with people picnicking and paddling.

The North East, however, didn’t manage the record-breaking temperatures seen further South.

The Met Office recorded highs of 28C at St James’ Park in central London, making this the hottest early Bank Holiday Monday on record. Tuesday may mark a return to the office for many, but according to the Met Office it won’t mean an end to the glorious weather.

Early reports on Monday morning warned of a possible thunderstorm in Newcastle for Tuesday, but by Monday afternoon forecasts had been revised, putting sunshine and highs of 22C on the agenda.

Into the rest of the week, cloudy skies will start to make a return, however.

The Met Office predict overcast conditions, and temperatures between 15C and 13C for Wednesday and Thursday, with scattered showers also possible.

But there’s some good news: for those hoping to break out the barbecue next weekend, forecasters say the weather will be “fine” again by Friday.
