Question of right or wrong is childsplay
THE SECRET LIFE OF 5 YEAR OLDS Channel 4, 8pm
THERE’S a comical moment as the Secret Life nursery returns tonight, when the five year olds delve into the fancy dress box.
One little boy, Luke, decides to dress up like Donald Trump, and it’s not the kindest of impersonations. “I’m President Trump, I can do whatever I want to do!” shouts Luke. “Can I have your money?”
Perhaps it’s no coincidence that Trump has made an appearance in a debate about morality. This two-part special focuses on children learning the difference between right and wrong. And Luke has decided – and who are we to argue? – that Trump is “the naughtiest person he’s ever heard of”.
Teachers Simon and Kate have set various challenges, each task giving us an insight into the children’s moral compass.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, clinical psychologist, Dr Elizabeth Kilbey, and educational neuroscientist, Professor Paul Howard-Jones listen in with headphones, offering commentary on their behaviour (and having a good old laugh too).
“What’s the naughtiest thing you’ve ever done?” asks Kate, to varied responses. One child confesses to eating an ant while another admits stealing a rubber.
It’s an interesting and often amusing insight into the minds of kids, although sometimes you feel they are being set up to fail just for our entertainment.
In one task, the kids are told that every time they roll a double six they can put a jelly bean in a jar. But when the teacher leaves the room, will they cheat?
I fear even most adults would crack in the name of free sweets.
