British Science Week

-

EVERY YEAR, in early March, schools up and down the country embrace all things scientific, and participate in British Science Week. Continuing the time honoured tradition, Bede Academy participated for the fifth year.

The week was filled with a range of events, covering the main three scientific branches; Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In lessons, students explored new concepts in each branch, such as Space, Plant Biology and Flame Tests. Older students took part in dissections, of both plants and organs.

Outside of lessons, a wide range of extra-curricular activities were on offer to students. Students were especially excited by the Physics department’s Ruben tube. It is a tube filled with gas which is then set alight – like having 50 mini Bunsen burners. It is named after German scientist Heinrich Ruben, who theorised that one could see sound, using fire. Despite some setbacks, the experiment was a roaring success, and set alight the observing student’s passion for science.

Overall, British Science Week was an exciting and interesting event that inspired students and staff alike to get into science. TEAMS HAD A GREAT DAY at Trinity Academy in March as part of the ESF Olympics. After a long journey, teams were quickly changed and ready to go in a variety of competitions.

The Year 7 Cross country team completed a course around the perimeter of the fields and finished in 2nd place overall in the relay event. Top performers were Ryan Dixon and Millie Gibson.
