PLUCKY Lucas Campion is a rising ice hockey star picked to represent the UK. Lucas, of Tynemouth, started skating when he was just seven and now, aged 11, he has been chosen to play for the national team and will be heading to Bratislava, Slovakia, for an international tournament next month. His mum Samantha said: “We are so proud of him. He’s worked so hard for four years and this shows.” Lucas, a pupil at Kings Priory School, first got a taste for skating a few years ago. “He had a go on the artificial ice rink that used to be in Tynemouth,” she added. “He really enjoyed it. “Some coaches were there and one suggested Lucas should take up ice hockey as he had good coordination. “After that we took him to Whitley Bay Ice Rink where he continued skating. He has now been playing for the Billingham Stars ice hockey team for two years and is the captain of his Northern Conference team this season.”

Samantha and his dad Michael have supported him all the way, and were thrilled when he got through the tough selection process for a place in the UK squad.

“He’s absolutely elated to be picked for the national team,” said Samantha.

Geordie ice hockey legend David Longstaff, said: “Lucas is a great player and he’s getting better”

The family have to raise around £950 to fund Lucas’ trip to Bratislava. Anyone who can help, contact samantha.campion15@yahoo.com
