Raining champions!
HETTON AND PRUDHOE VICTORIOUS AT FESTIVAL
THE annual Spring Football Festival was again held at Gateshead Fell Cricket Club.
The rain-soaked event attracted several teams from across the region in both the under-nine and under10 age groups.
The eagerly-anticipated tournament always proves to be an excellent day of football and this year was no exception.
Organsiers sent a big thankyou to Seymour’s Engineering, Joseph Swan School and Gateshead Juniors for helping making the event hugely successful.
As always, the tournament format consisted of several groups, leading teams from each progressing to the latter stages and finals.
All of these were evenly-contested throughout, with great competitive football being played.
In both age groups the finals were nip and tuck right to the finish.
The under-nine group produced a nail-biting final, Hetton and Chester-le-Street’s Waldridge Park going head to head.
This always promised to be a cagey affair as both teams had not conceded a goal up until this point.
In a tight match, Hetton just sneaked a 1-0 victory.
The under-10 final soon followed, Newcastle Inter Boys Club facing Prudhoe, in another closely- contested affair.
It always seemed this would also be decided by one goal - but that goal never came and a nervy penalty shootout therefore ensued.
After some great saves and a string of equally fine spot-kicks, Prudhoe eventually came out on top 7-6.
The Fell now turn their attention to the prestigious Gateshead FC Cup – a 2018/19 pre season tournament held over the August bank holiday weekend for under-nine and under-10 squads.
Any team wishing to take part can obtain an entry form from the club on 07956 065 020 - watch out for full coverage in Grassroots Sport.
