HOW YOU CAN PLAY YOUR PART AND HELP IT WIN

- By KALI LINDSAY Reporter kali.lindsay@reachplc.com @KaliALindsay

BLIND, epileptic and arthritic Hazel Macrae was told by the Department for Work and Pensions that she was deemed fit enough that she should seek work.

Hazel – who has been blind since birth – turned to her local paper for help and we shared her story over three days, challenging the DWP over its decision.

The 62-year-old’s story prompted one of our biggest social media reactions and propelled Hazel into the national spotlight.

After Chronicle Live highlighted the grim reality faced by Hazel – and many others in her position – celebrities, politicians, charities, and our readers slamming the DWP’s decision.

After a relentless campaign, Hazel was given the good news that she’d won her appeal and we were able to shine the spotlight on a welfare system that’s affecting our most vulnerable.

Now Hazel’s story has been shortlisted for the Making a Difference award by Local Media Works.

But, for Chronicle Live to bag the top accolade – we need your help.

The award aims to highlight the power of local newspapers to campaign for positive change in the communities they serve, with 26 entries shortlisted for the accolade.

The winner is decided by a public vote which closes at 5pm tomorrow.

Once again, we are asking for your help by voting for the Hazel’s story, so we can continue to serve our readers and the local community.
