Why? This event will have something for you regardless of your age or experience. WOW, that's a lot of ‘w's.

Gateshead Chess Club has existed a long time, with periods of success and occasional dips. It has always had a good atmosphere with sociable and helpful members. They play at the Carlton Club Low Fell, 11 Belle Vue Bank, Gateshead NE9 6BQ. Please contact the club before visiting by emailing Peter Wells – peter.wells@heraeus.com. Club nights start at 7pm.

I remember playing against Gateshead in 1996. I played longterm member Billl Noble, who won the Gilroy trophy that year when in his early 60s.

He won it again in 2004 and 2014, a tremendous achievement. I cannot remember the result of our game, which probably means that Bill won! This is a good club with approachable people, and well worth a visit.

Leam Lane Chess Club meet at the Leam Lane Social Club on Tuesday at 7.15pm at Leam Lane Workingmen's Club, Fewster Square, Gateshead NE10 8XQ. Call Rob Appleby before visiting the club on 0191 421 9120 or 07850 115 170.

Leam Lane Chess Club welcomes players of all abilities and experience. The club currently has three teams in the league, with top players competing in the first division and newer members trying their hand in the lower leagues.

There are weekly opportunities for social chess; on most Tuesdays there will be players at the club, especially during the competitive season of October to April. There'll always be the opportunity for a game or some post-game analysis to help you improve. If you're travelling any distance, call ahead to ensure there'll be someone at the club. They will look forward to meeting you.

I have visited this club numerous times to play in inter-club matches. Their members are friendly and sporting. A newer club but they have a terrific record, winning the First Division title in 2002, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. One of their members, Jonathan Hawkinns went on to become a top Grandmaster and British Champion and author of a good book on improving your chess standard.

I strongly recommend a visit to either or both of these clubs..

You will be able to find out more information at Saturday's chess event.

We have four puzzles this week in increasing order of difficulty. If you can do any of these you can approach these clubs with confidence. If you can't it should not stop you going; they'll be pleased to teach you. In all four puzzles it is White's turn to move.
