TOWNS and villages have been decked out in red-and-yellow bunting and flags to celebrate Northumberland Day.

From Vikings, to gin and rock festivals, there was plenty for families to see and do across the county over the holiday weekend.

Officially taking place yesterday, the event aims to celebrate all the great things about Northumberland.

Alnwick Rum launched a new Lindisfarne Fudge to mark the occasion at Taste of Northumbria in Alnwick.

One Twitter user said: “Loving the new Hadrian’s gin and all the foodie tasting and tipples at Taste of Northumbria in Alnwick.”

There was the Amble Puffin Festival, which brought puffin-themed activities to the port, including guided nature walks, bird watching and live music.

The warm weather meant it was the perfect day for the Hexham Ramblers to head out on a 10-mile walk in North Northumberland and the Cheviots.

Punters were able to enjoy a special race evening at Hexham Racecourse.

Revellers watched a range of local bands take to the stage for music festival Ashington Rocks.

The Northumbria Herred of Vikings invaded Bamburgh Castle and set up camp to show visitors what life was like.

Meanwhile, the 28 arches of the Royal Border Bridge in Berwick were glowing in the yellow and red colours of the Northumberland flag last night, while flags were flying at Northumberland County Show in Bywell Hall.

Hexham councillor Catherine Homer tweeted: “Today is #NorthumberlandDay and as communities celebrate all that is truly unique about our county, I look forward to a summer of cultural events which will undoubtedly result in a more vibrant, confident and forward looking Northumberland.”
