Toffees set their sights on Lascelles

tion next season. The big danger is Newcastle chiefs become intoxicated with the success of finishing 10th and expect a repeat performance with a scattering of new signings this summer. Unfortunately, as brilliant as ending the campaign in the top half was for United it was nip and tuck at the end and it was Benitez’s coaching and management which achieved it - not careful and strategic financial planning from the board.

The demise of West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City and Swansea City are glaring examples of what happens when you don’t invest.

We have now had a verbal pledge of backing from Charnley too - but United fans are judging the club on completed deals rather than promises from the boardroom.

With the window hotting up, this summer could be the most crucial yet for the powers-that-be at St James’ Park. NEWCASTLE United skipper Jamaal Lascelles is a £25million target for Everton - according to weekend reports.

The Toffees are looking to replace Phil Jagielka in the heart of their defence and see the former Nottingham Forest man as the ideal choice.

Lascelles has already been linked with both Chelsea and Liverpool this year.

While he has made it clear he sees his future on Tyneside, the Magpies may have to resist some big offers for the 24-year-old in the current window.

It is claimed both Everton and West Ham United, who have just appointed Manuel Pellegrini, are keen on the Toon captain this summer.

Meanwhile, another report suggests Kenedy is on the radar of Liverpool after his successful loan spell at Newcastle in the second half of the season.

Kenedy has held initial talks with Rafa Benitez about his future but is uncertain of his next move and his agent has been exploring his options.

The Brazilian under-23 international has already been linked with Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. Speaking about his future earlier this month, Kenedy had said: “I would like to thank Rafa Benitez because he trusted in me.

“I really enjoyed my time there - it was very good.

“All the players, all the staff, they made me feel at home.

“I felt good. I gained confidence from the amazing support and I really enjoyed it.

“Maybe one day I will be back.”
