It’s harbouring fish and chips among the best

- By BARBARA HODGSON

Reporter FISH and chips is a favourite meal around the country and the North East serves up some of the very best – and that’s official.

A popular Northumberland stop-off has been singled out as one of the best fish and chip restaurants in the country: placed at number four in a list of just 10 top picks.

According to TripAdvisor, The Harbour View in Seaton Sluice – already confirmed as one of the region’s most popular chippies – batters most of the competition. Its fourth place was beaten only by rivals down south – two Londonbased eateries and one in Devon.

The restaurant, known for its enormous queues every Good Friday, has clearly won over foodies from far beyond the region too.

One TripAdvisor traveller remarked of it: “Cracking bit of fish. Very big and very tasty. They say it’s grim up north. Well, not here, it isn’t. I would come back tomorrow if it wasn’t 400 miles from home.”

The news will delight the The Harbour View ahead of National Fish and Chip Day this Friday, which will no doubt see those queues forming once again. The Harbour View was rated behind only Jolly Good, in Teignmouth, Devon, and Fishers Fish and Chips and The Golden Chippy, both in London.

It was followed by Yorkshire Fisheries in Blackpool in fifth place, then Thompsons Fish Restaurant in York; North Bay Fisheries in Scarborough; The Harbour Seafood Restaurant and Takeaway in Plymouth; Silver Street Fisheries in Whitby, and the Grosvenor Fish Bar in Norwich.

The list of 10 best fish and chips restaurants in the UK was based upon the quantity and quality of reviews. All the restaurants had a minimum of 20 TripAdvisor reviews tagged under ‘fish and chips’.
