FAMILIES with disabled children were given a special half-term treat at Eldon Leisure’s bowling alley in Newcastle.

The Sunshine Fund hosted a bowling party for the North East’s ‘Sunshine Families’ to get together and enjoy an afternoon of fun.

The event was a perfect opportunity to promote the upcoming Go Bananas Fundraising Appeal, which will be running throughout June.

The charity needs the public’s support to help raise vital funds to provide local disabled children with equipment they desperately need. Space for the event was provided by Peter Harrison from Better Eldon Leisure and organised by Rachel Kaczmar from the Sunshine Fund.

Several of the children had never experienced bowling before and had a fantastic time getting to grips with the activity.

For some of the older kids, it was a chance to hone their skills and get competitive with parents and siblings.

Among the parents attending was Joanne Brown, who said: “We had a fab afternoon bowling with Sunshine Fund families - it’s fantastic that’s its inclusive for the whole family and huge support from staff and other families.”

Vikke Lee added: “AJ had a fab afternoon. We have definitely found a new hobby for him!”

Peter Harrison at Eldon Leisure said: “We really enjoyed having our friends from the Sunshine Fund at Eldon Leisure. It was great to see the families enjoying our facilities. We are committed to providing our leisure facilities to everyone.

“If any groups want to come along to Eldon Leisure please get in touch and we will organise this for you.”

Rachel Kaczmar, community coordinator at the Sunshine Fund, said: “We are grateful to Peter and the team at Better Eldon Leisure for providing our families a space to meet up and have fun.

“It’s so important for families to be able to enjoy activities all together.

“We really appreciate and want to celebrate all of Peter and the team’s efforts to make Eldon Leisure an accessible and disability friendly venue.”
