The Bradford-born artist, who studied at his local college, blazed a trail in the pop art movement of the 1960s and is now considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. This large-scale 1970 painting is one of many which reflect his interest in chairs. The missing subject of the chair on the left is most likely the artist, who’s now 80, himself.

This West Yorkshire-born carpenter and clockmaker, who lived 1693 to 1776, invented this Marine Timekeeper which could measure longitude, the east-west position, enabling sailors to identify their exact location at sea. Before he did so, only latitude – the north-south position – could be measured accurately. This instrument, which gave seamen the ability to navigate a way safely between different places, saved countless lives at sea.

The Liverpool-born artist, who lived 1724-1806, was famous for painting horses and Whistlejacket was one of the most famous racers of all. Foaled in 1749, his most renowned race was a win over four miles for a 2,000 guinea prize at York in 1759.

Stubbs’ huge painting was completed in 1762 for the horse’s owner – and a great patron of Stubbs – the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham. The 1773-1857 engineer, inventor, aviator from Scarborough made the first heavier-than-air flight in one of his flying machines at Brompton Vale near his home town. This was in 1849-54 years before the Wright brothers made their first powered flight in the US. Cayley also produced early designs for combustion engines, spoked wheels, finned missiles and propellers. The 1941-born designer from Tintwistle, Cheshire, was a pioneer of 1970s punk fashion before moving into high fashion in the early 1980s. She launched this pirate costume – inspired by the clothes of highwaymen and pirates of history – at her first catwalk show. It became known as the New Romantic look. Captain James Cook was born in Middlesbrough in 1728. He is most famous for the three voyages of exploration he undertook to New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii between the age of 40 and the year of his death: 1779. And his wooden paddle was gifted to him by the Maori people on his first voyage aboard HMS Endeavour to New Zealand.
