The love flows both ways as Bay mixes it up

- Sophie Barley

‘EVERY show is special but this one is a little bit more special, I’ve got a soft spot for this city.’ James Bay was clearly glad to be back in Newcastle. He’s made it known previously that he loves our city and on Tuesday night James Bay proved it in beautiful style.

Performing songs old and new at the O2 Academy, James poured his heart and soul out to a sold-out crowd.

The Newcastle United fan is one talented individual, with a songbook of beautiful tracks to his name.

With a guitar in his hand for pretty much every track, he had the Academy in the palm of his hand.

He started with one from his new album, Electric Nights, Wasted on Each Other.

He told the crowd he’d be performing plenty of new tracks – and plenty of old. And that he delivered on. There are some sublime songs on his new album which he treated us to – including the glorious Us, surely a future single – as well as Just For Tonight and Wanderlust. The stunning Slide was a song performed without guitar. And Wild Love was just effortlessly beautiful.

When it came to his first album - If You Ever Want To Be In Love was, as predicted, a favourite with the crowd.

One of the performances of the night had to be Best Fake Smile. A gorgeous song.

Scars and Let it go also provided beautiful moments, as well as Hold Back the River.

Craving is a gem from the first album and his finale song was a pleasant surprise for lovers if his first album. It was the sweet, wonderful I Need The Sun To Break.

The penultimate number was a very cool version of Tina Turner’s Best.

He said he has a soft spot for Newcastle, and James, we have a soft spot for you.

One day he will sell out arenas, and judging from this performance, it won’t be far away.
