-

NEWCASTLE Catholic Primary Schools had their end of season Under-11 Tournament at Goals of Gosforth.

The teams were split into four groups – in Group 1, St Charles finished top with St Alban’s second. St Bede’s were third ahead of St George’s.

In Group 2, St John Vianney took top spot on goal difference from St.Mark’s. In Group 3 English Martyr’s took top spot and in Group 4 St Cuthbert’s finished top with St Oswald’s second. English Martyrs B finished third and St Teresa’s finished fourth.

In the quarter-finals, English Martyr’s had a comfortable 4-0 victory over St Mark’s. St Charles overcame St Oswald’s while St Cuthbert’s Kenton A beat St Alban’s.

St Catherine’s scored a very late goal to beat St John Vianney.

St Catherine’s came unstuck in the semi-finals when St Cuthbert’s Kenton A defeated them 3-0. The other semi-final was a lot closer with English Martyrs A defeating St Charles 1-0. In the 3rd/4th place play-off St Charles took 3rd place with a 1-0 victory over St Catherine’s.

The final turned out to be a tense affair with little to separate the two teams. English Martyr’s edged the first half but they were unable to turn their possession into goals. As the second half progressed, St Cuthbert’s Kenton gradually got on top.

In the end it was an almighty goalmouth scramble that led to the winning goal from Luke Barton.

St Cuthbert’s’ Frazer Sisterson was voted Player of the Tournament.
