Decision is to be made on the future of at-risk library

-

THE future of an ‘at-risk’ library is set to be decided this week.

Newcastle City Council revealed plans last month to transform part of Fenham Library into a health and well-being hub in order to keep the facility open.

The authority said the future of the library is under threat as Your Homes Newcastle (YHN) prepare to vacate their offices at the site - but civic centre officials have since clarified the library is not expected to shut regardless of whether the new plans go ahead.

The library, which dates back to 1938, was first scheduled to close as part of the council’s 2013-16 budget proposals but the authority found a way of keeping it open by turning part of the building into offices for YHN.

Councillors will vote on whether to approve the health and wellbeing hub proposals - which include designs for a gym and a cafe - at a planning committee meeting on Friday.

A report from the council’s planning office has recommended the plans should be approved, saying: “It is considered the principle of reusing the library for a health and well-being centre with ancillary therapy rooms, gymnasium and cafe is acceptable.

“The proposal would ensure the grade II listed building remains open and the existing library function is operational for the use by the local community.

“There would be no external alterations which directly affect the closest residential properties which would have the potential to impact upon their existing level of light, sunlight, outlook or privacy.”

The meeting will be held at 9.30am at Newcastle Civic Centre.
