Hosts walk off with the top honours

WALKING FOOTBALL

-

THE newly-formed Amble East End Walking Football Club hosted a new over-50s tournament at Amble’s 2018 annual Puffin Festival.

Clubs travelled from as far afield as Catterick and Teesside took part of the tournament.

The hosts were able to enter two teams in preparation for their entry into the Blue Flames League for the 2018/19 season.

During more than four hours of continuous play of 20-minute matches, East End fought off opponents Grangetown and Newcastle United Foundation to progress to the semi-finals.

From there they reached the decider where, after a close game, they claimed a 1-0 victory against Middlesbrough.

Plate Winners were Grangetown, with Catterick the runners-up.

Newcastle United Foundation claimed the cup honours ahead of Amble East End.

East End striker Del Brooks picked up the Golden Boot Award for top scorer and player of the tournament.

Amble East End Walking FC is going from strength to strength.

Its plans to join the Blue Flames League, as well as the interest received in the Puffin Festival Tournament, are a clear indication there is a demand for competitive sporting activities in the over-40s age group within the Northumberland area.

Organisers wish to thank supporters of the festival, without whom the tournament could not have happened – Amble Town Council, Amble Puffin Festival Committee, The Radcliffe Club, Styles by Helena, The Bengal Spice Tandoori and James Calvert Spence College – as well as Amble East End Club members who helped on the day.

The club meets every Tuesday at Amble’s James Calvert Spence College (6.00-7.00) and new players aged over 40 are welcome to go along.
