Youngsters add to Heed new signings
GATESHEAD have taken their signings up to eight – six of them local players aged 22 or under.
Defender Jon Mellish, who can play in the centre of defence or at full-back, has re-signed for the Heed.
Mellish broke into the first-team last season having come through the youth system, and made 10 appearances. He said: “I’m buzzing to get signed – it’s been a long summer and there’s been a lot going on behind the scenes. But being a young lad it hasn’t really bothered me – I just want to play football at Gateshead.”
Mellish benefited from a loan spell in the Northern League at Newcastle Benfield, something that toughened him up.
Gateshead boss Steve Watson said: “He came back a different player both physically and mentally, and he did well when he got into the side.
“He’s a young player learning his trade but is comfortable on the ball and has great potential, which he needs to fulfil.”
Former Newcastle United under-23s player Jack Hunter has also put pen to paper on a one-year deal at the International Stadium.
Hunter (pictured) said: “I had a discussion with the manager and we discussed the way that we’ll be playing football and it’s something that I bought into.
“I was very impressed with how he came over. He’ll be a really good influence and help me progress – it’s a great opportunity for me.”
Hunter, 20, has been on Watson’s radar for some time.
He said: “What impressed me most about Jack was his attitude. He has bought into what we want to do and he’s got a strong mentality for such a young lad.
“He’s a leader and a midfielder that can mix it up as well. That’s something we need at this level.”
Central defender Danny Burns, a £10,000 signing from Buxton two years ago, has been released from his long-term contract.
Gateshead’s players return for pre-season training on Monday, with more signings expected before then.
