Jarrow’s hitmen are on winning side in hard-fought bouts
JARROW boxers Nathan Bell, Robbie Colman, Ethan Swainston, and Jack Murphy all won their bouts on Bilton Hall’s last show of the season at The Shack in Boldon.
Bilton light heavyweight Bell, 21, was giving weight away to Adam Pattinson of Leam Lane but used switch-hitting tactics to help out-score his opponent, especially in a strong final ro d.
Light welterweight Colman, 20, was involved in a hard-fought bout against Brandon’s Sam Lyall.
Lyall started strongly and forced Colman to the ropes but the Bilton star countered well and then scored with his own fast combinations.
Colman moved well around the ring in the next two rounds and scored with fast jabs and overhand rights to earn the judges’ nod.
Welterweight Swainston, 19, produced an excellent performance on the comeback trail when he outpointed the tough Scott Robertson from Walkerfield.
Robertson started strongly, forcing Swainston back to the ropes but Swainston’s clever footwork and fast counter punches to head and body gave him the edge with a split decision.
Murphy, 16, stretched his record to six wins in a row when he outpointed Reece Mann from Scarborough.
Murphy used his height and reach advantage to pick off his opponent and scored with crisp left hands out of his southpaw stance.
Bilton middleweight Ewan Mackenzie, 20, was involved in a tough bout against the more experienced Aiden Whiting (Tootill) that had the crowd on their feet.
Mackenzie, boxing 3x3-minute rounds for the first time, looked comfortable during the first but Whiting came on strong throughout the bout, forcing Mackenzie to the ropes and letting go with two-fisted combinations to take a close points decision.
Seventeen-year-old local light welterweight Owen Lovely looked good against Joe Sloane from the Lakeside club but was edged out.
Bilton schoolboy Ben Boldon, 11, dropped a decision to the much taller Jack Brown from Newbiggin.
Zane Stockil of Northumbria University carried the Tyneside flag to success on the Redcar ABC bill at the Redcar Leisure Centre.
Stockil took a split decision over the host club’s Nick Harding.
Other Tyne boxers Cori Rowell (High Fell) and Tommy Burn (Dunston) dropped points decisions.
