Hebburn sign impressive defender

-

EBAC Northern League Division One club Hebburn Town have completed the signing of Shildon defender Dan Groves.

The former Blyth Spartans and Spennymoor Town defender becomes the latest impressive addition to the Hornets squad.

He joins the likes of Andrew Stephenson, Graeme Armstrong and Louis Storey in joining the ambitious South Tyneside club this summer.

The move was prompted by an injury to defender Jack Donaghy and the departure of Rhys Williams to Washington FC.

Hornets manager Scott Oliver believes that Groves is likely to be his final addition of a busy summer but didn’t go as far as ruling out any more business.

He said: “I’ve been speaking to Dan for a while and I’m pleased to have another experienced defender on board, it’s two players for the price of one for me as Dan is versatile and can play anywhere across the back line, he gives us lots of options.

“Unfortunately for us Jack Donaghy has been ruled out for two months due to a freak accident to his hand/arm so it made sense to push Dan’s signature through.

“I’d like to think our summer business is complete but never say never. It’s our first pre-season session tonight so opportunity for the lads to get to know each other”

Groves brings an end to his three-year stay at Shildon and he is excited by the prospect of helping his new club deliver on their exciting ambitions.

“It’s great to get it finalised,” admitted Groves.

“I’ve spoken to Scott quite a bit and it’s an exciting project here and one I’m pleased to be a part of.

“The club have signed a number of good players to go along with the existing lads from the promotion squad so should be to give it a good go in division one, I’m keen to get cracking.”

Meanwhile, former Hebburn Town striker Dan Robinson has become one of a number of new signings at Division Two club Washington FC.

North Shields have confirmed that experienced centre-back duo Kevin Hughes and Richard Pell have committed to the club for the coming season.

Consett have added to their impressive attacking options with the addition of former South Shields striker Aksel Juul.

The young forward left the Mariners at the end of last season and is second new addition.
