SUNDERLAND manager Jack Ross feels new signing Chris Maguire could quite easily become a fan favourite at the Stadium of Light. Maguire joined the Black Cats from Bury on a two-year deal and will offer Sunderland League One experience and versatility as he can operate as a midfielder and a forward. The 29-yearold suffered relegation with Bury last season but caught the eye in a previous spell at Oxford - and Ross feels his style of play will appeal to Sunderland fans. He said: “Chris had a disappointing season last year in terms of how Bury performed as a team, but he has played in England since 2011 and has had successful periods at different clubs.

“When I first spoke to him, and after he came here to have a look around, he was desperate to come because he will tell you this is the biggest club he’s played for.”

He continued: “He has a cockiness about him but in a good way, and he has a bit about him.

“He is a really good boy but he comes here with a belief in his own abilities and a desire to make the most of this opportunity, so I am pleased he is aboard because he has proven quality.

“We are trying to recruit various players across the squad, there is a hunger side to it and you have to have the ability deal with the expectations of the club.

“I know how hard he works off the ball, which is a big part of the way I play, and he has proven quality in the final third in terms of goals and assists.

“I think he is one supporters will take to and he is really excited ab out coming here.”
