LANDMARKS SET TO TURN BLUE TO CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY OF THE NHS

LANDMARKS across the North East will be turning blue to celebrate the 70th anniversar­y of the NHS.

The Millennium Bridge across the Tyne, Newcastle’s Civic Centre, and Penshaw Monument in Sunderland will be all be glowing for the big day on July 5.

Other areas are also being encouraged to say ‘Happy Birthday’ by turning their buildings and landmarks blue.

NHS England’s medical director for Cumbria and the North East, Professor Chris Gray, said: “We would love more buildings across the North East to get involved and to light up blue on the evening of July 5.

“We are calling on churches, mosques, castles, historic homes and any buildings in towns, cities and villages to get involved and light up blue if they have the facilities to do so.”

St Mary’s Lighthouse in Whitley Bay, the Royal Border Bridge, Berwick, and the Town Hall, Sunderland Magistrate­s’ Court and Keel Square will also be shinning bright .

Coun Michael Mordey, deputy leader of Sunderland City Council, said the authority was delighted to be joining in with the nationwide celebratio­ns.

He added: “The founding of the NHS was one of this country’s greatest achievemen­ts. “As well as its free health care, it has played a major part in eradicatin­g once common diseases such as polio and help pioneer new medical treatments for many people.” Northumber­land County Coun Veronica Jones, cabinet member for Adult Wellbeing and Health, said the NHS is a fantastic institutio­n which should be celebrated. She added: “We are very fortunate in this country to have a health service that supports us to live longer, healthier lives. “We wish it well on this landmark birthday. “I am proud to say we will be showing our support in Northumber­land by turning Berwick Border Bridge blue.” Members of the public are being encouraged to celebrate the occasion by taking pictures of the buildings and landmarks. You can share them across social media with the hashtag #NHS70light­upblue.
