Use water ‘wisely’ call as hot spell sees spike in demand

- By IAN JOHNSON @IanJohnsonChron Reporter ian.johnson01@reachplc.com

WATER should be used “wisely” amid an increase in demand for it during the heatwave.

That’s Northumbrian Water’s message as the region sizzles in the scorching summer sun.

Customers are being urged to turn taps off while brushing teeth and to take short showers rather than bathe to preserve water levels.

The organisation says the region has a “healthy” water supply – allaying any fears of a hosepipe ban.

However, Martin Lunn, Northumbrian Water’s head of technical strategy, said steps should be taken to ensure it doesn’t run out.

“Our water supplies remain healthy at this time, and we are keeping a close eye on this as the warm weather continues,” he said.

“We have seen an increase in demand over the past week, but our message remains as it always is and we’re asking customers to use water wisely to help us manage supplies.

“Even small changes can make a big difference, so if you are watering plants do it early in the morning or later in the evening so they can absorb the moisture, remember to turn the tap off when brushing your teeth, and try to cut a minute off your morning shower.

“While there is no overall shortage of water it is always important that people use water wisely, ensuring we don’t waste this precious resource.”

“Of course it’s also very important to stay well hydrated when the weather is warm, so make sure you are drinking plenty of water, and carry a refillable bottle with you so you can top up on the go.” If water reserves do start to dry up, Northumbrian Water said action can be taken. And the firm has urged people to stay safe around water, particularly reservoirs, which can attract swimmers in the sun. It says they are unsuitable for a paddle as they can be deceptively deep and extremely cold – while strong underwater currents can prove potentially fatal. As water use increases, the organisation has released some top tips for saving water. These are: Water plants in the evening to retain moisture in the soil. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth and save six litres of water each time. Shower rather than take a bath and save 10 litres every time. Take shorter showers (aim for four minutes per day) – this can save up to 17 litres per day Use full loads in your dishwasher and washing machine. Use a bucket rather than a hose to wash the car. Using a bowl when hand washing dishes saves seven litres every time. Report any leaks you spot so that we can fix them quickly – ring the leak line on 0800 393084. Replace washers on dripping taps – they can waste up to 26 litres of water in 24 hours – that’s enough for a shower. Get a water butt to collect rainwater. This gives you a free supply of water to use in the garden during warmer periods. Northumbrian Water offers water butts at discounted prices for customers.
