Chevy Chase fell runners face gruelling heat and heavy load
RUNNING 20 miles can be tough at the best of times but, for the 300 who will line up in the Chevy Chase fell run this weekend, it is expected to be even tougher.
The Wooler-based running club took over the organisation of the event in 2004 when it looked as though it would go to the wall as numbers plummeted below 100.
However, this year’s 62nd running – and walking – Chevy Chase has once again attracted an entry limit of 300 with many disappointed competitors having to be put on the waiting list in case of any drop-outs.
It’s certainly going to be a challenge for those fortunate enough to be on the start line as the temperatures are expected to be high for the duration of the contest.
As well as having to negotiate the summit of both Cheviot (2,675ft) and Hedgehope (2,348ft) competitors carry appropriate gear associated with spending a few hours on the hills and fells.
While it’s going to be hot, a waterproof whole-body cover is just part of the equipment which every entrant must carry.
Add to that a hat, gloves, a fleece top, a whistle, a map, and a compass and emergency food, makes it a heavy burden as the miles tick away.
Water stations will also be at a premium so competitors will have to hump their own liquid,.
However, it will all be worthwhile when the finish line is in sight at Wooler Youth Hostel where it’s time to relax and enjoy the delicious refreshments put on by an army of volunteers
