There used to be a river here... now it’s a trickle
BUT RAIN COULD BE ON THE WAY TO FILL IT UP AGAIN
Reporter THIS is what was left of the River Tyne at Corbridge on Friday after another dry week across the North East.
The Environment Agency has said the dry conditions caused river flows to decrease across the country.
Flows were classed as “normal or below normal for the time of year” at most of indicator sites.
But the South Tyne is among only a handful across England where levels are classed as “exceptionally low”.
And rainfall totals over the past week are less than 1mm across all of England.
A spokesperson said: “Cumulative rainfall totals for July to date range from 0% of the July long term average (LTA) in northern, central and east England to 8% in south-west England.”
But that could be about to change with scattered showers and thunderstorms predicted for the next few days – although the North East will escape most of them.
Temperatures will hit the mid20s today and tomorrow, although there is a chance of rain showers on Monday.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “There will be some cloud affecting parts of the North East.
“It has been cloudy the last few days and it will be more of the same.
“There might be the odd shower and this has the potential to be quite heavy later this evening. “Overnight it will clear up. “The rain that will be affecting the western parts of Britain is not likely to reach the North East, so it should be cloudy but warm with temperatures in the low 20s, going up to the mid 20s on Sunday.”
