TWO sports clubs in Tyne and Wear will be improving their facilities this year - while also helping to give young people trade and building skills.

The projects - at Houghton-leSpring Golf Club and Newcastle’s West End Rugby Club - have been made possible by a partnershi­p between the clubs and the national initiative Volunteer It Yourself.

They will help young people to enhance their CVs by learning trade and building skills on the job and gaining vocational skills accreditat­ions. ■■HARTLEYBUR­N Karate Club’s Lucas Frater passed two grades from white belt to red - at a gradings competiiti­on in Sunderland run by the Northern Karate Associatio­n. ■■ALNWICK will face Stocksfiel­d in the semi-finals of the Hadrian Golf League’s Davison Cup at Tyneside GC.

In the other last-four clash, Tyneside meet Bellingham at Alnwick GC. ■■CONSETT beat Heworth 11-3 in Division One of the North Durham Golf League.

Other results: Seaham 11 Brancepeth Castle 3, Boldon 12 Chester-le-Street 2, Ramside A 7 Durham City 7. ■■BURNHOPE take on Beamish tonight in the North East Durham Cricket League’s 20/20 League Cup. Other ties: Kimbleswor­th v Belmont, Wearmouth v South Hetton, East Rainton v Stanhope, Seaham Harbour v Coundon. ■■BENWELL Hill and South Northumber­land meet tonight in the Dukes North East Premier League Cup.

In the ECB Under-19 Club T20 competitio­n, Gateshead Fell host South Shields. ■■MORPETH B defeated Astley B 26-0 in the Northumber­land Summer Netball League’s Under-14 Division.

Other results: Hexham 7 Seatonians Pink 6, Ponteland C 7 Wansbeck B 14, Hexham C 4 Seatonians Purple 10. ■■DURHAM CCC are holding a Mini Jets summer cricket coaching camp for five to eightyear-olds at the Emirates Riverside from Tuesday, July 24 to Thursday, July 26 (9.30-11.30 each day).

It is also expanding its safeguardi­ng team by appointing Michael Turner as Assistant Safeguardi­ng Officer.
