Oddfellows are left stumped as Halliday celebrates four wickets

-

JOHN Halliday made history when he took 4-37 for BelMonte against Oddfellows in Division Four.

His figures included a hat-trick and all his victims were stumped by wicketkeeper Tony Davison in the final over.

There is only one known recorded instance of this feat happening before in first-class cricket.

That was in 1893 by Gloucestershire’s Welsh-born wicketkeeper William Brain against Somerset at Cheltenham.

His three victims all came off the bowling of future England leg-spinner Charles Townsend.

Oddfellows, chasing 147-4 of which Phil Cosford contributed 65, needed 21 runs off that final over to win the game before Halliday’s heroics - and ended up on 135-6.

Meanwhile, Kirkwood surged to the top of the Division One table with victories over Civil Service and Ratcatchers.

Kirkwood (100-5) first bettered the Civils’ 98-8 .

They then reached 111-4 - with 71 not out from Mukhtar Hussain in just nine overs - after dismissing the Catchers for 110, Amjad Ali taking 4-30.

Oceans hit 187-3 - thanks to 116 not out from Sandeep - to beat Civil Service, who were dismissed for 133.

Blue Flames with 140-5, based on 41 from A Riaz and 39 not out from Z Shahid, defeated North Star, who replied with an encouraging 131-6 and 48 by M Ali.

Merz and McLellan posted 148-4 with 62 from Ben O’Brien - to beat West End by 37 runs in Division Two - despite W Ali hitting 47 not out for the West Enders.

Matrics Barbarians amassed 135-4 courtesy of 64 from Jamie Guy before holding off Northern Rangers, who replied with 121-5 based on 48 from Ashraf.

In Division Three, there was yet another 100 not out from Sean Longstaff of Tynemouth Old Boys in their comfortable 85-run success over Mitford.

Parkhouse also defeated Mitford thanks to 55 not out from Daniel Foster and then 3-17 by Keith Reader.

Whitley Bay totalled 137-3 to better 135-2 set by Sparta and based on 85 not out from Gary Roe.

The Bay inflicted only the second defeat of Sparta this season as Varun Goyal blasted 58 not out partnered by Graeme Turnbull - 38 not out - with two overs to spare.

Eaga Old Boys beat Whitley Bay by 43 runs in the Paddlers Plate.
