SHE was born as the merciless slaughter of the Somme raged.

And now the family of a woman who is turning 102 are appealing for help to make it extra special.

On July 22, Wyn Davison will celebrate the special occasion with family and friends.

To mark the occasion, her loved ones would like people from around the globe to send birthday cards to Wyn.

Her nephew Ron Clark, 62, said: “We thought this would be a really nice way to celebrate. She has three carers coming in but is still in good health. I visit her three times a day, but still feel it is not enough.

“So I thought I would ask people to send her a birthday card.

“We are trying to get cards from around the UK and international.”

Last year, the family asked people to send cards for her birthday and Christmas.

Ron said they were blown away by the number they received.

“We did it for her birthday and she received around 400 cards and then at Christmas she got the same again,” Ron, of Washington, said.

“She loved the cards she received. There was someone from Sunderland contacted me and said they were her neighbour 50-odd years ago, so we organised for them to come and see her. She was really pleased with that.” Wyn, who is Sunderland born and bred, is known to many residents in the area through her work and charity efforts. Ron said: “She worked in a cake shop in Southwick and retired from there at 65 and then volunteered for Meals on Wheels. “She always says it is hard work that keeps her going.” Wyn also served in the Women’s Royal Air Force and still continues to raise funds for charity. Anyone who would like to send a card can post it to: Wyn Davison, c/o Ron Clark, 98 Rowan Avenue, Washington, Tyne and Wear, NE38 9AG.

She retired then volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She always says it is hard work that keeps her going Nephew Ron Clark
