Frankie to be honoured by ex-Toon stars

-

FoRMER Newcastle United stars will turn out this weekend to play in a charity game in memory of Frankie Sherwood.

The four-year-old fought a devastating battle with the childhood cancer neuroblastoma and passed away in February.

Former United player Peter Ramage will be playing while Malcolm Macdonald and ex-United and Republic of Ireland star Mick Martin will also be in attendance.

Frankie was mascot for both Newcastle, when he met Aleksandar Mitrovic and the players, and the Robins for a game in the Northern League.

His grandad Michael Laidler said: “A North Shields FA Vasewinning team plus fans will take on the current North Shields squad plus celebrities and fans.

“Frankie was diagnosed on May 25, 2015 with high-risk stage-four neuroblastoma. He was only 22 months old.

“He relapsed while having treatment, which is very rare, and he went through nearly three years of treatment.

“Frankie sadly passed away at 3am on February 5 - he would have been five on July 21.

“So we thought it would be fitting to have the memorial match as close to his birthday as possible.

“We are raising funds for Frankie’s RVI fund which will buy toys, TVs and DVD players for wards four and 14.

“The cash will also help other children suffering from cancer to make everlasting memories.

“We are also raising funds for Jack Fieldhouse’s recovery fund.

“Jack will be 13 on the July 20. He was diagnosed with leukaemia in January this year and suffered a stroke in February.”
