Take is as Red, school’s pupils enjoy Foundation’s big day out
DURHAM County Cricket Club enlisted the help of 46 year six pupils from Red Rose Primary School to help name their new female mascot.
The Chester-le-Street based school was introduced to the club’s new mascot following an outdoor cricket session taken by the DCCC Foundation.
They then took part in a creative design session to help the club select a name for the mascot prior to her unveiling at the Durham Jets’ first Vitality T20 Blast fixture against the Yorkshire Vikings.
A number of names and illustrations were submitted by the youngsters.
However, Nathan Webley and James Bainbridge’s submission of the name ‘River’ was awarded first place and was announced to 8,000 Jets supporters prior to the T20 fixture.
The pupils also enjoyed a tour of the Emirates Riverside and learned key skills during their outdoor cricket session.
DCCC Foundation ManagerJosie Pointon said: “This was a great opportunity to get young people involved in what we do.
“They were able to experience cricket, a sport they may not be too familiar with, and also help name our new female mascot something which will always connect their school to the club.” ■■DURHAM CCC are staging three school summer holiay coaching camps for eight to 13 year-olds at the Emirates Riverside.
The camps offer a fantastic opportunity for young aspiring cricketers to play and train on the same field as the professional players and to be coached by the Durham Cricket Board’s experienced coaching staff.
The three-day courses - running each day from 9.30-3.30 - are from July 24-26, August 14-16 and August 21-23.
They will include specialist skills sessions on running between wickets, fielding, fast and slow/spin bowling, wicket-keeping and batting.
