Star pupils put on real Light show

-

THE Beacon of Light welcomed more than 200 young footballers for a special tournament to celebrate the diversity of the World Cup.

Hosted by Sunderland AFC’s official charity the Foundation of Light, the Premier League Primary Stars World Cup Tournament saw 23 primary school teams take to the Beacon’s 3G and 4G pitches to show off their skills.

Each school was randomly allocated a country competing at this summer’s extravaganza and asked to design a flag representing that nation.

The youngsters were also given a once-in-a-lifetime experience when the Premier League trophy was unveiled as part of its tour around the country.

Howletch Lane Primary School represented England and teacher Debbie Sturge said: “The tournament has been excellent and the kids have really enjoyed it.

“The Beacon of Light is amazing, it is the first time we have been and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

“The partnership with the Foundation has definitely benefitted our students.”

Following the group stages the teams were placed into gold, silver and bronze playoffs. Easington Colliery (France), Barnes Juniors (Egypt) and Ribbon Academy (Denmark) triumphed in each section to claim the title of ‘Primary Stars World Champions.’

David Dowson, the Foundation of Light’s School Sports Coordinator, added: “Today has been brilliant.

“We have had 23 teams here at the Beacon playing football in the right way – helping and supporting each other.

“The reaction we have had to the Beacon has been fantastic.

“It is the first time many of the teachers and pupils have visited and they were overwhelmed by the facilities.

“To top it all off we have had the Premier League trophy here and the kids have been able to have their photograph taken with it”.

Premier League Primary Stars uses the appeal of the Premier League and professional football clubs to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills.
