PUTTING IN THE WORK

Murphy’s ‘hungry to play and hungry to succeed’

JACOB Murphy admits it is ‘grind season’ for him with Newcastle United.

It is just over a year since Murphy arrived in a £12million deal from Norwich City and the winger cannot wait to build on his debut year.

At 23 he is eager to kick on but he knows only hard work will earn him the thing he craves most at Newcastle.

Murphy - whose parents are staunch United supporters - was born into the world of the black and whites with images of the Toon star as a baby going viral on social media around this time last year.

Murphy ended last season with the desire to do well for the Magpies burning in his stomach and that feeling did not leave him throughout the summer.

With the mind-blowing experience of being a fan who had the honour of wearing a Newcastle shirt in a Premier League game now behind him - not to mention his first goal for the club away to Man City - Murphy is ready to focus on his second season.

He told the Chronicle: “It is great to be back because the summer felt very long.

“I have been working hard during the off season to get myself ready and I feel in really good nick. I am just hungry.

“Hungry to succeed, hungry to play and hungry to work hard.

“Working hard over the summer was something I saw as a chance to attack the season ahead.”

Murphy’s arrival at Newcastle was something of a whirlwind last year as cameras tracked his every move as he jetted from Norwich’s training camp in Germany to Carton House in Ireland, where he officially became a United player.

This year’s stay in Maynooth was slightly calmer for Murphy who said
