The only way is up for Gateshead’s young track and field talent
A STRONG team showing at the final National Young Athletes League fixture at Middlesbrough secured a surprise victory on the day and an overall second-place promotion for Gateshead’s under-13 and under-15 squads, writes BILL McGUIRK.
The result was especially pleasing considering the squad opened the campaign by finishing in last place in the first of the four fixtures in May.
A concerted effort by coaches and team manager Karen Webster ensured the overall squad win numbers throughout the summer.
Gateshead’s returning English Schools’ Championships representatives - Jack Halpin (throws) Ava Tapperel, Ines Curran (800/3,000m), Joy Eze, Daniel Lenny and Liam Eastaugh (sprints) maintained their high standards providing much-needed points throughout the afternoon with quality performances and victories.
Excellent results from under-13 athletes Joel Brown-King, Ethan Dewar, Lynda Ajayi, Lucy Webster and Georgia Mabbott (sprints) ensured the younger age group contributed strongly to the points haul as the afternoon unfolded.
Victories for Lexie Ellis, Divine Gogua, Tracey Mayamba, Orla Carty and Mason York, ably supported by Thomas Mann and Vinnie Baker meant the field event athletes matched the track performances.
A winning 1,500m result for David Race and the under-13 sprint relay teams confirmed the team’s result.
