and join the club. The only focus was to come to Newcastle.

“Benitez is a top coach and I can learn a lot from him. I can learn a lot from the Premier League and English football in general.

“There is a lot to do. First I need to get settled and see how it all works.

“I have experience already but I am looking to improve as a player here. I want to help this team.”

Schar hopes to bring more than just defensive clearances to the table for United too.

He is also capable of popping up with the odd goal but he believes he can bring other qualities to United.

He added: “It is not that I am not a typical defender because I know I have to defend for the team.

“I will do anything if it means putting a zero on the scoreline in favour of Newcastle. What I can also do is help the team by showing my qualities.

“I can also bring good passing and long balls to the game as it has been my strengths throughout my career.

“I will keep that up and help this team.”

Schar joins Newcastle on the back of the World Cup finals in Russia in a tournament in which he almost ended up facing England.

He said: “It is a great experience to play at a World Cup and I am proud to play for my national team.

“Now I am focused and looking forward to new things here and a new season.”
