Search is on to find the North’s unsung heroes

-

EVERY two years Sport Newcastle recognise the unsung heroes of local sport at their biennial awards evening.

There are hundreds of volunteers working with sports clubs who give their time freely for no reward other than the pleasure of seeing others enjoy their sport.

Without them many clubs would not exist and thousands of young people would never have a chance to follow the sport they love.

Sport Newcastle is looking for nominations from club committee members, parents or players who would like to recognise the good work of these people. The 10 most deserving will be honoured at a special awards evening at Kingston Park on Tuesday, November 27.

A special award sponsored by JustSport will be presented to the Young Unsung Hero, who must be aged under 21.

Two years ago Milly Kyne, a young volunteer at Newcastle’s Hat-Trick charity was awarded the honour.

She has continued working as a volunteer for Hat-Trick and has gained coaching qualifications in football and tennis. She plans to go to university in September to take a degree in Physical Education and Sports Coaching.

Kyne said: “Receiving the Unsung Hero award in 2016 allowed me to believe in myself and it gave me the confidence to help young people express themselves through sport.”

To nominate an unsung hero, download the form on the events page on the Sport Newcastle website www.sportnewcastle.org.uk or request one by emailing contacts@sportnewcastle.org.uk

Deadline for nominations to be returned is Monday, October 1.
