Newcastle’s Quayside market on old film

-

WELCOME to the latest instalment of CineSecrets.

Over the coming months, we will be revealing hidden gems that show historic Tyneside on film.

They come from the unique collection of the region’s North East Film Archive (NEFA).

This month’s film clip is narrated by South Shields-born actress Flora Robson.

The film records Newcastle Quayside’s Sunday market on a day in 1956.

It captures some of the hustle and bustle, the banter and the patter, the china jugglers, and a fleeting glimpse of Teddy boys from 62 years ago. You can see the complete film at www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com/film/ river-speaks A long-time Tyneside tradition, the Quayside market was first mentioned in records from 1736, but is thought to date from centuries earlier. It was one of many in the old town that included the Bigg Market, Groat Market, Flesh Market, Cloth Market, White Cross Market, Herb Market, Fish Market and Greenmarket, among others. Once a month we are releasing a Tyneside treasure from NEFA’s archive on our website - www.

Any nuggets of information, and tales about the people or the locations featured will help to piece together the stories of our region’s past.

CineSecrets forms just a tiny fragment of a vast catalogue of film collected and preserved by the North East Film Archive.

It’s part of the archive’s major new project, North East on Film, which will re-connect the people and communities of the region with their film heritage, and provide important glimpses into our history through special screenings, events and online collections.

The Chronicle is delighted to be teaming up with the North East Film Archive once again.

CineSecrets: Tyneside has been specially curated with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Meanwhile, we hope you enjoyed last month’s first CineSecrets clip from the North East Film Archive.

It showed a day at the Hoppings funfair on Newcastle’s Town Moor in 1959.

Around 20,000 people have so far viewed the video on our Facebook page. ■■To find out more about North East on Film visit: www.yorkshirefilmarchive. com/news/saving-more-our-north-eastfilm-heritage-everyone-see-share-andenjoy
