Bowlers’ big Day out

OPEN EVENT’S A SUCCESS AS SUN SHINES

-

UNDER the watchful eye of the Angel of the North, Ravensworth Bowling Club’s annual Summer Open Day again proved a resounding success.

Seventy-two bowlers of mixed gender and ability, the maximum allowed, descended on the bowling club in glorious sunshine.

However, while there was not a teenager in sight, the enthusiasm of those taking part was equal to any youngster over the day’s action spread over a period of six hours.

The Summer Open is one of Ravensworth’s highlights of the season and gaining a place in the starting line-up is a challenge in its own rights with bowlers travelling from a number of Tyne and Wear clubs.

Pat Connelly, the Ravensworth club secretary and organiser of the tournament, was delighted with the day and the feedback from many of the bowlers.

Connelly, who put his own bowls to one side to oversee the action, said: “Naturally, the weather always plays a huge part when it comes to playing bowls outdoors.

“The weather could not have been better and some of the bowling enjoyed by the spectators sitting around the green matched that. I think everyone had a good day and that is what it is all about.

“Bowls is a game which can be enjoyed by everyone whatever their age and while it is called an old man’s and woman’s game that is no longer the case.

“There has to be a winner and our Open Day is no exception.

“I, together with everyone else connected with Ravensworth BC would like to congratulate Doreen Kelly, Marj Ellison and George Carr for coming out on top and to everyone else who took part.’’
