FLORIAN Lejeune has undergone successful surgery on his knee injury.

After sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury during pre-season training, Lejeune has been ruled out for the majority of the Magpies’ 2018/19 campaign.

The Frenchman’s injury is a blow to both the player and United, given Lejeune was one of Newcastle’s most-impressive performers during the second half of last season.

Lejeune posted a photo of himself after his operation in a hospital bed on social media earlier this week.

Lejeune’s right leg is heavily strapped and, in the caption accompanying the photo, he tweeted: “My knee operation was a success. Now it is time to rest and recover @ NUFC.”

The club have confirmed Lejeune’s operation had been conducted without a hitch – and wished the defender a speedy recovery.

Whether that is because of wages, age or sell-on value is yet to come to light as United have not disclosed their transfer blueprint in public for some time.

Yet Benitez feels let down on a number of deals this summer after struggling to land a number of targets after financial restrictions were placed in his way.

This resulted in club legend Alan Shearer summing up the situation this week when he said: “Whoever goes in seems to be having exactly the same problem and it is quite
