A move to Wearside did not fit the Bill for striker Sharp

-

SHEFFIELD United skipper Billy Sharp turned down a deadline-day move to Sunderland, Blades’ boss Chris Wilder has revealed.

The Black Cats were keen to sign a striker before Thursday’s 5.00 deadline for permanent signings and made a late move for Sharp.

However, the 32-year-old - who scored his side’s opening goal in the 2-1 win at QPR yesterday - decided against calling time on his third spell at the club he supports.

Wilder said: “I told Bill, as I tell every player if there is interest in them, but that boy does not want to go anywhere.”

Sunderland had been linked with Sharp several times during the summer as manager Jack Ross looks to bring in another striker to strengthen his sparse attacking options.

Ross signed Charlie Wyke from Bradford City but he arrived with a knee injury and is still two weeks away from returning to fitness.

That has left Sunderland going into the season with 19-year-old Josh Maja as the club’s only recognised frontman, although he has seized his chance by scoring in both games so far.

While the deadline for permanent signings has now passed, EFL clubs can still sign players on loan until the end of August.

Ross hinted after Saturday’s draw with Luton Town he was hoping to add a striker ahead of Thursday’s home Carabao Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday.
