Do you back Stack?

NEW VENUE GETS MIXED REACTION

- By SEAN SEDDON Reporter

THE newest addition to Newcastle’s nightlife has got Chronicle readers talking.

Stack, which is constructed entirely from shipping containers, has opened on the site of the old Odeon cinema on Pilgrim Street.

As you’d expect, it’s been rammed all weekend - but not everyone is impressed. The drinks prices have raised a few eyebrows, with plenty of people commenting that it would put them off going. Punters can expect to pay close to a fiver for most pints and around £16 for a bottle of wine.

Facebook user Paul Symons said: “Far too expensive. Good fun, but rip off.”

But others have defended it, saying that if you want Newcastle to be full of interesting new developments, you need to be prepared to pay for it.

Aimee Mcpherson wasn’t totally impressed by Stack overall but pointed out the prices aren’t too dissimilar from a lot of places in the city centre.

She said: “I’m not sure where you guys are from or where you normally go out, but five quid for a pint and four quid a shot is the going rate in MOST Newcastle bars and restaurants.”

Aimee added: “Stop being so negative and let’s get behind it - if you don’t like it, don’t go.”

Anna Nikola said there’s something for everyone in Newcastle, regardless of taste of budget: “Thing is about Newcastle and Gateshead, there’s choice for everyone, you don’t have to sit at the containers...I think it’s great to see variety, that’s what makes our city great.”

There were plenty of comparisons to By The River Brew Co, a similar shipping container development which opened earlier this summer on Gateshead Quayside.

It’s been a roaring success so far and Stack has work to do to win over Newcastle revellers.
