Abusive ex forced his way into home

- By ROB KENNEDY Court Reporter

A DOMESTIC violence victim kicked her ex-partner between the legs and armed herself with a knife after he forced his way into her home in a “terrifying ordeal”.

David Robinson had been forbidden from going to the woman’s home under the terms of a restraining order imposed after he assaulted her.

But he turned up unexpectedly, pushed her back into the property and caused her to bang her head off a wall.

A court heard he then locked the door and started accusing her of having other men at the house.

She told him that was not correct and asked him to leave but he refused - grabbing her phone from her to stop her calling police, and smashing it.

Newcastle Crown Court heard children were hiding under a bed as the incident unfolded at the victim’s home in Widdrington, Northumberland.

But after booting him in the groin and brandishing a knife in selfdefence, Robinson eventually complied and threw her keys back so she could get out.

As Robinson was jailed, the victim said in a statement read to the court: “I feel scared and angry that he could do this to his children, who were hiding under the bed. “I feel unsafe.” Robinson, 24, of Sycamore Avenue, Sheepwash, Northumberland, had been given a restraining order and suspended sentence last December for an offence of common assault on the woman.

On April 7 this year the woman answered a knock at the door to find it was him.

Prosecutor Michael Cahill said: “He pushed her back into her house, causing her to bang the back of her head against a wall. He locked the door behind him and at this point he was accusing her of bringing other men into the house.

“He would not leave for a further two hours.”

Mr Cahill added: “He pinned her down to the floor with her hair.

“She was able to kick him between the legs, causing him to roll off her.

“Fearing so much for her safety, she picked up a knife and she again asked for her keys back. This time he complied.

“She was able to get out to get to her vehicle but even then he tried to prevent her leaving by trying to open the car door.”

Robinson pleaded guilty to common assault, breaching a restraining order and two charges of criminal damage. He also admitted breaching the previous suspended sentence.

Recorder Jo Kidd jailed him for a total of 43 weeks.

Richard Bloomfield, mitigating, said: “He has difficulty managing his emotions. He maintains he was invited.”
